Actor Irrfan Khan died in 2020 due to cancer. He was battling neuroendocrine cancer. Irrfan was a good friend of director Shoojit Sarkar. Both of them also worked together in the film ‘Piku’. Shoojit was so impressed with Irrfan that he made the recently released Abhishek Bachchan starrer I Want To Talk keeping the actor in mind. Shoojit Sircar talked about the last days of Irrfan Khan in the latest interview. He was in constant touch with Irrfan Khan. According to Shoojit, Irrfan was unable to fight cancer mentally and lost the battle.

Shoojit Sarkar remembers Irrfan

In a conversation with ETimes, Shoojit Sarkar was asked who inspired him to make I Want To Talk. He was also asked that the way the lead character of the film struggles with a serious illness, how would he react if this happens to him in real life. To this, Shoojit Sarkar said, ‘One of my friends had to face this situation, but he did not let this situation break him.’

‘Irrfan could not fight cancer mentally’

Shoojit Sarkar further said, ‘When Irrfan was diagnosed with cancer, I often talked to him. However, he could not fight it mentally. However, my friend did not surrender.’

Decision to make I Want To Talk after Irrfan’s death

Shoojit Sarkar again told that after Irrfan’s death, he got the inspiration to write the script. He said, ‘After Irrfan’s death, I decided to make this film for those who struggle mentally in such situations. This is not specifically about Irrfan but about anyone facing a mental health challenge. My friend was given 100 days but now he has lived 10,842 days.’

Shoojit Sarkar regrets till date

Shoojit Sarkar told in another interview that he has not yet recovered from the shock of Irrfan’s death. He still has a lot of regret in his mind, which he cannot get out of and it dominates him. Shoojit told that after ‘Piku’ he wanted to work with Irrfan again, but it could not happen.
